2006-Present

Some of the bones of the original Winns building have been repurposed in the foyer and hallways throughout the building. The Acculon building has ground level commercial lots with seven floors of apartments above.

Venture Department Store

The Venture Department Store was part of a chain of discount department stores that operated in Australia between 1970 and 1994. Venture experienced financial difficulties in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was placed in liquidation in April 1994, with all stores closing soon after. More info on Venture.

Winns Department Store

1910 - Winn & Co, William Winn and Company Ltd. Drapers,

In 1910 the old Hunter River hotel building was demolished by Winn & Co and a purpose built 3 story store was built by Winns.

The Hunter River Hotel

The Hunter River Hotel in the centre of the photo traded from 1878 on this corner site of Hunter and Brown Streets. Photo: 8 Hour Day Procession in Hunter Street opposite Brown Street. The eight-hour Day procession was to celebrate the eight-hour working day being enshrined in legislation.

Perkins St Brickyard

The land was first utilised as a brickyard where bricks were manufactured from clay dug out of Perkin Street.
